▎Essential Oil Introduction
Styrax tonkinesis is obtained from the fragrant resin of trees in the Hamamelidaceae family, also known as empire balm, styrax oil, or styrax resin oil. In autumn, the bark is stripped from the tree, and the fragrant resin is extracted. The residue is boiled in water and then pressed, with the extracted resin being the common styrax balm. Styrax balm is a semi-transparent, semi-viscous liquid. After distillation, crude balm is obtained at 1%, and further vacuum distillation yields colorless to pale yellow essential oil, with an oil yield of approximately 0.2%. The color of the essential oil ranges from colorless to amber.
Styrax is also known as "soul-returning incense." In ancient times, it was used in temples for incense offerings and rituals. During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, a large epidemic broke out in Chang'an. Emperor Wu burned incense in the palace, including styrax, which is believed to have driven away the plague.
