▎Essential Oil Introduction
Angelica Root (Angelica archangelica), also known as European Angelica, Holy Ghost Root, or Archangel Root, is a perennial, tall, and aromatic plant with hairy stems. It blooms in summer, producing round clusters of yellow-green flowers. Its hollow stems, often purple-tinged, are believed to have tonic properties. In Europe, the peeled stems are sometimes candied and eaten like lollipops.
Originally native to West Asia, particularly Syria—a land of ancient civilizations and primal power—Angelica later migrated to northern Europe. Thriving in cold, damp climates, the plant symbolizes resilience, inner strength, and empowerment in overcoming life’s hardships.
The genus name derives from the Greek word arkhangelos ("archangel"). According to legend, during the 15th-century Black Plague epidemic, Archangel Michael guided humans to use Angelica root to alleviate suffering. The plant’s blooming season coincides with the Feast of Archangels, earning it the title "Holy Root." It was also historically used as an amulet, antidote, and potion. Due to its potent properties, Angelica root was considered a valuable medicinal herb in medieval Europe.
