▎Essential Oil Introduction

Angelica sinensis, commonly known as Dang Gui, derives its species name “sinensis”, meaning “from China.” It is also referred to by various names such as Bai Qi, Gan Gui, Bu Xue Cao, and Ma Wei Gui. This perennial herb grows to a height of approximately 0.4 to 1 meter, produces white flowers from June to July, and bears fruit from July to August. Its cultivation is mainly distributed across several regions in China, including Gansu, Yunnan, Sichuan, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Hunan, Hubei, and Guizhou.

The root of Angelica sinensis is widely known for its use in traditional Chinese medicine and culinary applications. It is so renowned that it has earned nicknames such as “Ten Prescriptions Use Nine Dang Guis” and the “King of Herbs.”

Historical Anecdote: Tai Shi and Dang Gui

According to legend, Cao Cao once sent a letter to Tai Shi Ci that contained no words, only the Chinese medicinal herb Dang Gui. The gesture symbolized Cao Cao’s heartfelt plea for Tai Shi Ci to return home. This subtle yet profound message exemplified Cao Cao’s sincerity in seeking talent.

In Compendium of Materia Medica (Ben Cao Gang Mu), Li Shizhen wrote, “Dang Gui is not part of the celery family, but because its flowers and leaves resemble celery, it was given the name. Ancient people associated it with marital union and continuation of the bloodline. As a key remedy for regulating women’s blood, it carries the implication of caring for or being grateful to one's husband, hence the name Dang Gui (‘should return’).”
