▎Essential Oil Introduction
Litsea cubeba, native to China, India, Malaysia, and Taiwan, is also known as "Mountain Pepper," "Chinese Pepper," "Cuba Pepper," and "May Chang" in Taiwan, where indigenous people call it "Magao." It is an important tree species in the Qilan Mountain area, symbolizing vitality and renewal. The tree bears yellow flowers and strong leaves, emitting a potent aroma of pepper and ginger, often used as a spice in traditional indigenous cuisine.
Litsea cubeba essential oil is extracted from its fruit, which resembles black peppercorns. The scent is similar to lemongrass but with a fresher, citrusy note. Its chemical composition is akin to Melissa essential oil, which is why Litsea cubeba oil is sometimes referred to as a more affordable alternative to Melissa oil.
▎Component Analysis
|Main component: Monoterpene aldehydes
Its main component is citral (around 70%), along with limonene, esters, and monoterpenols. As a result, the scent is somewhat similar to lemongrass essential oil. Compared to other citrus-scented oils, Litsea cubeba essential oil has a slightly rougher, more robust character.
