▎Essential Oil Introduction

Peppermint (Mentha) derives from the Latin word mente, meaning "to think." It is a perennial herb that grows 30-100 cm tall, with underground rhizomes and green leaves, and it produces white or purple flowers. The essential oil is extracted from the flowers and leaves. Peppermint comes in various varieties, but the essential oil commonly used in aromatherapy is Peppermint, known for its strong menthol scent and easy to recognize.

▎Component Analysis

|Main Component: Monoterpenols

Peppermint contains various components, with menthol as the main one. Other components include menthone, isomenthone, pulegone, limonene, menthyl acetate, 1.8-cineole, menthofuran, β-caryophyllene, germacrene, coumarin, and sulfur compounds.

|Component 1: Menthol

Menthol, camphor, and methyl salicylate can all be absorbed through the skin. After being metabolized in the liver and conjugated with glucuronic acid, they are excreted through bile and urine.

|Component 2: Menthone

|Component 3: ß-caryophyllene

Also known as caryophyllene or germacrene, β-caryophyllene exhibits strong antiviral properties. When peppermint oil was injected intraperitoneally into mice, their activity levels significantly increased. Subsequent studies found that components of peppermint oil, including eucalyptol, menthone, isomenthone, menthol, (R)-(+)-pulegone, menthyl acetate, and β-caryophyllene, all significantly enhanced the mice's vitality.

|Research Validation

▸ Peppermint oil (PO) has been studied for its effects on pain and overall symptoms related to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).


▸ In a 2013 study published in Cancer Medicine Research by Tayarani-Najaran Z et al., research found that peppermint oil is associated with alleviating nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy.
