▎Essential Oil Introduction
Niaouli (Melaleuca quinquenervia), also known as Broad-leaved Paperbark, originates from Indonesia and New Caledonia (a French territory). Niaouli essential oil is a colorless liquid with a strong camphor scent, similar to eucalyptus. Compared to eucalyptus, the French tend to prefer Niaouli.
Niaouli grows abundantly in Australia and, like Tea Tree, belongs to the Myrtaceae family, Melaleuca genus. In ideal conditions, it can grow into an evergreen tree reaching 20 to 30 meters tall, with leaves around 7 cm long and pinkish bark. Niaouli comes in various chemotypes (CT), which means the essential oil composition can vary significantly, with types like Eucalyptol and Nerolidol. It is mild, non-irritating, and serves as a natural air purifier.
▎Component Analysis
|Main component: Oxides
Typical Niaouli contains components such as 1,8-cineole (Eucalyptol), Viridiflorol, Nerolidol, and (R)(-)-Linalool. It also contains minor components like α-Pinene, Limonene, and p-Cymene.
|Component 1: 1,8 cineole
▸ Chemical structure of 1,8 cineole.
▸ Research has shown that 1,8-cineole (Eucalyptol) has been studied for its anti-inflammatory activity.
|Component 2: Viridiflorol
|Component 3: Nerolidol
